Weekend Reading: Ethiopian Edition

By Kevin

Ethiopian countryside

Today marks a week since I returned from my trip to Ethiopia, a land of beauty and contrasts. I was there for two weeks, which isn’t a long time in this world, but was long enough for me to see new things and embrace new experiences.

Recent posts

I write more about my experiences in Ethiopia in the post A Journey to a Beautiful Land of Coffee and Contrasts…

I also had a great lineup of guest posts during the time that I was away:

Recent events

I also missed a lot along the way. There have been a lot of big events recently, such as the tragedy in Norway, the U.S. debt limit political fiasco, the market stumble, the explosion of the price of gold, and the death of Amy Winehouse. Then you look at what’s going on in London and elsewhere and wonder what the heck is going on in the world today.

Maybe we are more aware of these things today because of the overwhelming amount of information and communication available today, but it also makes you wonder: What’s going on in those parts of the world that aren’t important enough to make it to the western mainstream news? There is only so much we can filter at a time, so there is much that we miss out on. This became apparent to me during my time in Ethiopia, when we spent some time watching Al Jazeera as well as the other news outlets and it was interesting to see the world news from a slightly different angle.

    Thanks for including my book review, and for sharing your thoughts on coming back from Ethiopia. Goodness knows, with everything that’s been happening in the world lately, it must have been interesting to come back and see what happened in the world. (Even odder, perhaps, to see it through the media lens of a whole different culture.) I look forward to reading more about your trip!

    Thanks for the mention. You really saw a lot that few Westerners get to see. I trust all the craziness in the world sped up your emergence from your “zombie state”.

    @Andy Hough

    You are welcome!

    @Hunter @ Financially Consumed
    I wrote a bit more about the trip here: http://www.investitwisely.com/a-journey-to-a-beautiful-land-of-coffee-and-contrasts/ and I hope to share some lessons that I learned in subsequent posts. One should be appearing soon on the Yakezie!

    @Matt
    Np!

    @Roger, the Amateur Financier
    It was definitely interesting to read. I wonder how accurate it all was. One journalist in Ethiopia alluded to a massacre in Rome some years ago when refugees ran to the fences and were gunned down, but I didn’t find more information about that online. Is it factual and was suppressed? I’m always curious… then you have others that talk about how European companies dump toxic waste off the shores of places like Somalia. Again, have to wonder how much is true or not, but makes you wonder what the heck is going on in the world.

    @DIY Investor
    Heh, yep, pretty back to normal now. 😉

    @My Own Advisor
    Thx! Will hopefully have some more posts based on what I learned.

    @Sandy @ yesiamcheap
    It was definitely an experience. It’s more a feeling; hard to put it into words.
