Time Management Tips for Business Owners

By Mich

small business toolsTime management is an admirable skill that not many people have or know how to practice. Time management can help in a variety of different areas of life, but most notably in business. Having outstanding time management skills can positively impact a business. If you are a business owner, or even an employee in a business setting, and struggle with time management, here are some tips to help you better use your time and accomplish more at work.

Learn How To Optimize Your Time to Accomplish More in Your Work Day

To get the most out of your workday, you need to optimize your time. In other words, you need to make the most out of every hour of every workday in order to put out the best quality work you can by using your time wisely.

Plan Your Work

It’s important to plan your work at the beginning of each workday or at the end of each day for the next morning. This can give you an idea of what needs to get done before the end of the day and will allow you to spend a designated amount of time on each project or responsibility. Make sure you spend an appropriate amount of time on each project and move on if you begin to hit a wall and return back to it at the end of the day.

Planning work will also get rid of any unnecessary stress of forgetting to complete an assignment. Overall, planning your work will help you spend your time accordingly per task.

Prioritize

Prioritizing your work builds off of planning your work. Make sure to accomplish work that is the most important or has a stricter deadline than other tasks. This small workflow shift allows you to get the most important things done early on in the day so that you aren’t feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Similarly, prioritizing work will leave time for any mistakes or issues that may occur because there will be time to fix them throughout the workday.

A bankruptcy lawyer in Philadelphia pointed out the importance of prioritizing work in the law field; saying that people’s lives could be greatly impacted if a business owner, or in this case a lawyer, does not plan accordingly. A business owner’s lack of prioritization and time management could affect more than just him or herself.

Cluster Similar Tasks

Putting small tasks together is another great way to optimize your workday and time management. Small tasks can end up taking up a lot of time throughout the day; whether those small tasks are answering emails or dealing with employee issues, the time spent on each small task can add up, ultimately taking up a large part of the day.

Setting up an hour or two to deal with clustering these small tasks, ideally in the middle of the day, is a great time management skill for business owners to adopt. This will allow you to put off these small tasks until the designated time, allowing you to use your time to complete bigger projects.

Eliminate Distractions

This is perhaps one of the most obvious, yet challenging ways to practice better time management. Distractions, work-related or not, get in the way of you completing your priority tasks. In order to best manage your time, do your best to get rid of known distractions. For example, keep your cellphone in your desk drawer, or sign out of your email so that you have to sign in when you want to check your mail. This will allow you from getting sidetracked with other obligations and will let you use your time for whatever you are designated it for.
