A lot of individuals wind up getting stuck with a credit card in their wallet that is totally inappropriate for their needs. Their credit cards end up costing them a whole lot of money unnecessarily. You can avoid getting stuck with a bad credit card by checking for the following information.
Check out the fees being charged
You need to start combing through your card’s terms and conditions to find out exactly what fees your card is charging you. You could be paying a ton of money in annual fees, monthly fees, late fees, application fees, and renewal fees. Some credit cards come so loaded up with fees that you are left with very little in available credit. This is all free money to your credit card company that is paid at your expense. Card fees should be kept to a minimum and should not have you paying a fortune to your card company.
[Kevin] Usually the interest is already quite significant, so there’s really no reason to pay fees on top of that unless it helps you save on overall expenses.
Compare your credit card’s interest rate
The best way to find out if you are paying too much in interest to your credit card company is to test your rate out and compare the market rate of interest against it. Your interest rate is based on a number of factors like your credit rating and payment history. Your interest rate should not differ that much from the market average. If you find that you are paying two to three times the market average, you should go hunting for a new card immediately.
Get the right credit limit
The credit limit is one of the most overlooked pieces of information out there. Too few cardholders pay attention to their credit limits and that is why so many of them go over it. It is important to get the perfect limit for your credit needs. Some credit cards automatically bump up to the highest interest rate as soon as a cardholder goes over their limit. This is no good. You want a limit that is high enough that you keep from going over it and low enough that you do not go on a wild spending spree.
